This is how Ljubljana looks today:

I want to hibernate in Ljubljana.

That is how it has looked every day since I arrived a month ago. Every. Single. Day. Not exactly great sightseeing weather. It’s a bit difficult to admire the pretty pastel coloured buildings and the hilltop castle when you can’t see them through the fog.

I have to keep reminding myself that Ljubljana normally looks like this:

I wonder when I'll see blue skies again.

And that in a couple of weeks I’ll be sipping hot apfelwein at the Christmas markets in Austria.

Salzburg will probably be cold and miserable.

I’m still undecided as to which Christmas markets we’re going to visit. I know Vienna is gorgeous in winter and they have quite a few markets so that’s definitely on the list. But aside from that, I’m thinking Salzburg and maybe Graz or Linz. Innsbruck would be great but it’s a little far from Ljubljana.

Are there any smaller Austrian towns with great Christmas markets? I’ll have to do more research.

Since this was posted I've written about a few Christmas road trips which might be of interest if you're thinking of spending your next winter holiday in Europe.

After Austria, I’ll be back in Ljubljana for Christmas and more work on my non-travel blogging projects. I haven’t been travelling much since Berlin in October and I’m quite happy about that. I feel like I’m getting into winter hibernation mode.

In case you missed it, I published four posts on the blog last month:

Towards the end of December, we’ll be packing up and heading across the border to spend New Year’s in Budapest. It’s been ages since I’ve done anything for New Year’s. I hope Budapest puts on a good show. We’re splurging on a couple of nights at the Sofitel and will then move into an Airbnb apartment for a while. Do you have any travel plans for New Year’s Eve?
